Description

This has always been one of my favorite buildings in Detroit, MI. It is just outside of Greektown but it is one of the proudest German sites in the city! It is a historical site and recognized as such:

St. Mary’s Church in Detroit Michigan!

St. Mary’s parish was founded by Father Martin Kundig in 1835 for the German-speaking Catholics in Detroit and is the third oldest Catholic parish in the city. The cornerstone for the original church was laid on the Feast of Corpus Christi, June 19, 1841, and the church was consecrated in the honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on June 29, 1843. This high Victorian Romanesque style structure was designed by German parishioner Peter Deterichs. The cornerstone was laid in 1884, and the edifice completed in 1885. St. Mary’s founded the first black and Hispanic Catholic missions. Since 1893, this parish has been guided by the Father’s of the Congregation of the Holy Ghost, C. S. Sp.

such concetration to the cornaces and brakets! this is so beautiful! and its in detroit? whod have thought that! hoiw tall do you think it is? it surely dwarfs the churches here in my little city... our churchs barely go past 7 stories high.... this is gorgous! it makes me want to photograph the churches downtown now...
